Headteacher's Bulletin

Week 27

I hope this finds you well and that you enjoyed a restful and enjoyable Easter break.  It’s good to be back and we are quickly into the swing of things here.  I’d like to congratulate our Year 10 and Year 12 students, as they started their mock exams this week.  This can be a stressful time but our students have shown real commitment to their studies and pride in their achievements.  I’d also like to thank the group of Year 7 students I met for breakfast and hot chocolate this morning – all demonstrating Respect Responsibility and Kindness every day.

Here’s some of the other great things that have happened this week.

Eco-committee Wildlife survey

To support their work with The Parks Trust, members of our Eco-Committee recently conducted a wildlife survey to identify and record plants, insects and animals in the school courtyard. Through this activity, students enhanced their understanding of biodiversity, ecosystems, and the importance of the food chain, developed valuable teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills while promoting mental wellbeing by connecting with nature in an outdoor setting.

Eco-Committee Endangered Animal Recyclable Model Competition

Last term, our Eco-Committee ran a house competition which challenged students to design and make a model of an endangered animal using only recyclable materials. Entries were judged by members of the Eco-Committee who were impressed with the creativity and imagination demonstrated. Congratulations to Sanya in Year 7 who was awarded 1st prize for a fantastic red panda and to runners up Clara and Shaki, well done to you all!

Careers Roundup
Here are some of the careers highlights from the end of last term.

Year 10 SSG Programme at Woburn Safari Park
Our Year 10 students took part in a three-part programme delivered in partnership with SSG, focused on workplace experiences, future skills, and personal development. As part of this, students visited Woburn Safari Park, where they had the opportunity to hear about the wide range of careers within the park, learn about apprenticeships and work experience opportunities, plus how the park contributes to conservation, breeding programmes, and global collaboration with other zoos.

Students were challenged to create and present a pitch on why people should visit Woburn Safari Park. Working in groups, they planned, delegated roles, explored the park, and brought their ideas together into presentations delivered back to industry professionals who were impressed at the variety of ideas, creativity, and confidence shown. Every group approached the challenge differently, demonstrating real teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. Thank you to everyone involved for creating such a meaningful and engaging experience for our students.

Year 12 Bank of England
Year 12 Business and Economics students recently enjoyed a visit from Mark Brookes from the Bank of England., who brought economics to life through his session, giving students insight into how economic theory is applied in the real world. He also shared his own international career journey and how his role has evolved over time. The session included an open discussion and Q&A, giving students the opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of what working in the sector is really like. Opportunities like this play an important role in helping students link their learning to real career pathways, develop their confidence, and feel more prepared to plan their next steps. We are proud to continue building strong employer partnerships that bridge the gap between education and employment.

Year 10 & 12 Visit from a Medical Student
We were delighted to welcome Niamh, a medical student, who spoke to Year 10 and 12 students about her journey to becoming a doctor and gave an honest and insightful perspective on what a career in medicine involves.

Students gained a clear understanding of the different routes into medicine, including the academic commitment required, the UCAS application process, and key admissions tests such as the UCAT. She emphasised the importance of dedication, resilience, empathy, and strong communication skills. For our Year 10 students, Niamh highlighted the importance of preparing early, managing exam pressures, and making the most of opportunities to explore their interests. She also shared valuable advice on gaining experience, including virtual work experience, and how building a strong portfolio can support future applications. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where students had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions and deepen their understanding.

We are very grateful to all of our guest speakers for giving their time to help our students navigate the opportunities available to them.

Sports Kit Sponsors
Our sports teams are looking and feeling fantastic in their new kits, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors. We are grateful to Adia Estate Agents for supporting our basketball jerseys, Tango Check for providing our netball dresses, and MK Bathrooms for sponsoring our KS4 Boys National and County Cup football kit. Their contributions play a vital role in helping our teams represent the school with pride, as these kits will be worn by students across the school when competing for Watling Academy.

ParentMail Top-Ups
We are aware of some parents experiencing problems topping up students’ lunch accounts since the ParentMail app update. If you have been affected by this, we recommend deleting and re-installing the app which should resolve the issue. If you are still experiencing problems, please email admin@watling.academy.
