Eco Committee Celebrates a Year of Outstanding Achievement

This academic year has been another incredibly successful one for our Eco Committee, with students demonstrating exceptional commitment, enthusiasm and leadership in promoting sustainability across our school community.

The dedication of our students has been recognised through two significant achievements. We were proud to gain accreditation through The Parks Trust Secondary School Award, recognising our efforts to care for the environment and improve biodiversity in Milton Keynes. In addition, we achieved the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag Award in June 2026. Building on this success, we will now begin working towards achieving the Distinction Badge next year.

Throughout the year, Eco Committee members have led and supported a wide range of environmental initiatives. A major focus has been on biodiversity and sustainability within our school grounds. Students took part in vegetable growing and harvesting activities, with produce collected and delivered to Cucina for use in school meals. This gave students a practical understanding of sustainable food production while supporting our school community.

Our commitment to biodiversity was further strengthened through a tree planting project, during which students planted five new trees around the school site. These trees will provide valuable habitats for wildlife and contribute to a greener environment for years to come.

The committee also organised a successful Pumpkin Harvesting Competition, celebrating the results of months of careful growing and maintenance. These activities have helped students appreciate the importance of food cultivation, healthy ecosystems and responsible land management.

Environmental awareness extended beyond our school grounds through our partnership with The Parks Trust. Students attended several assemblies delivered by a Parks Trust representative, learning about local conservation work and the importance of protecting wildlife habitats. Eco Committee members also carried out a wildlife survey, helping to raise awareness of the biodiversity that exists within our own school grounds.

Energy conservation remained a key priority throughout the year. Through The Great Watling Switch Off, students encouraged staff and peers to reduce unnecessary electricity usage both at school and at home. This initiative promoted simple but effective habits that contribute to reducing our environmental impact.

The committee also worked hard to improve awareness of litter and recycling. Students launched a Litter Poster Competition, promoting positive environmental messages through tutor notices and creative student-designed posters. They also supported efforts to improve recycling across the school by helping students identify the correct materials for recycling bins and encouraging responsible waste disposal.

The grand finale of the year took place on Culture Day, where students from all houses competed to create the best planter. Houses demonstrated impressive creativity by sowing seeds and decorating their planters, combining sustainability with cultural celebration. The event showcased teamwork, imagination and the environmental values that have become such an important part of school life.

These achievements would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of our Eco Committee members. Their passion for sustainability has helped make a real difference to our school environment and wider community.

A huge well done to all of our Eco Committee students for your dedication to keeping our school green, raising environmental awareness and inspiring others to care for our planet. We look forward to building on this year’s success and achieving even more next year.
