This week has been another rather damp week and we do hope you’ve not suffered too badly wherever you are.
Our Year 11 students have completed their mock exams and we hope they feel as proud of themselves as we do of them. They have shown strength and resilience to combat their nerves and have dealt with the process with maturity. Mock examinations enable our students to feel as confident as possible in their final GCSE exams in the summer and we will continue to work with them to achieve their full potential. We want to thank our students and their families for their support and hard work during this time and we look forward to congratulating them on their results in due course.
Today, our Friends of Watling Academy (FOWA) hold their doughnut sale. If you pre-ordered doughnuts, your child will be able to collect these at the end of the school day from the Canteen area and individual doughnuts will be available to purchase. We want to thank those who have participated in the doughnut sale, by doing so, you are helping to provide vital funds to the school to enable enrichment activities, such as our school allotment project. We also extend our warm thanks to all those on the FOWA team for organising such a delicious event! Their next meeting is being held on Monday 18th November, please save the date in your diary.
I have been asked by Thames Valley Police to share the attached information regarding use of e-scooters. It is important to note the use of privately owned e-scooters is illegal on public roads, pavements and cycle lanes. If individuals are riding a privately owned e-scooter in public they are committing road traffic offences, which could result in significant penalties. E-Scooters can pose significant safety risks; they reach high speeds and there have been reports of incidents which have led to serious injuries. The only e-scooters which can be lawfully used in public are those which are part of an approved local authority scheme. The operators have their own policies and generally restrict usage to over 18, but legally you need to be old enough to hold a current driving licence to use the scooters; this includes provisional licences from the age of 16. Students should not arrive to school by e-scooter and should not have a privately owned e-scooter for use in any public space. We will not store any e-scooters on the Academy site.
As part of our improvements to our social media channels we wanted to highlight our very own Art Department Instagram account. The Art Department use this platform to display some of the fantastic work being created by our KS3 students. Please do go give them a ‘follow’ @wa_art_dept.
Our competitive sports calendar has been extremely busy this week, with a huge 12 fixtures over 3 days! There have been several netball and football fixtures against St Pauls and Badminton against Hazeley. Please see the news story on our website and Facebook feed for more details regarding our sporting achievements this week. Huge congratulations to all those involved in our sporting fixtures, it is clear that their enthusiasm, respect for each other and hard work is paying off. We also thank parents/carers for their continued support to make students available for after school fixtures and are in full Watling Academy kit.
Finally, we mentioned last week the Age UK ‘Joy of Older Life’ Art Competition, where four of our students had made it through to the Top 10 across Milton Keynes. Their work was displayed in Middleton Hall last weekend and we want to congratulate all four of them on this achievement. However, I also want to highlight that two of our students were chosen for the Top 3 slots and won themselves a prize. Avalon was the judge’s top pick for a Secondary School entry and Sneha won the public’s eye receiving over 600 digital votes over the weekend. We are all so proud of the talent that was on display.
I wish you all a happy and restful weekend, hopefully with a slight increase in the Autumn sunshine.
Mrs H Fry
