Student leadership in Sustainability (Eco-Committee)

We take pride in our sustainability work led by the students of the Eco-Committee, whose contributions make our school a greener environment for the planet. With the support of staff and the site team, over the past few months the Eco-Committee has held various meetings to discuss the impact of food and vegetation around the school. This has allowed us to carry out an action plan to focus on biodiversity and food initiatives.

One of our most recent endeavours was to plant pumpkin seeds into the newly developed vegetable boxes outside on the 13th May.  The aim is to use harvested pumpkins for a House Pumpkin Carving Competition in time for Halloween. We will be planting vegetables and herbs in the next half term. Our efforts not only promote a healthy eating lifestyle but also bring awareness to the positive environmental impacts of incorporating harvested ingredients into school meals. Furthermore, this allows us to stress the importance of collaboration and communication, with our participants working together to make the school a more sustainable place overall.

Other phases of our action plan have also been taking root, such as tree planting on the 28th March. Students involved were actively planting saplings outside of school to enhance the school grounds and increase the range of biodiversity within the area. This aimed to create a greener and more wildlife-friendly space for vegetation to thrive in. Additionally, on 3rd April, the Eco-Committee helped to plan and lead a community litter pick within Whitehouse, which involved various year groups. This event not only helped to clean up the local area, but demonstrated the activities that students can partake in to tackle real-world problems within sustainability and help the environment long-term.

Community Litter Picking on 3rd April

Our committee have demonstrated environmental change that begins with education and action. With the help of collaborative work, creativity, and awareness of the environmental issues the world faces, the Eco-Committee can help to build a better, more sustainable environment. Not only for the school but for the wider community. We look forward to moving on to the next stages of our action plan to continue developing a greener area for the school.
