Week 5

It’s Friday again and despite the weather giving us a rather gloomy end, we have had another brilliant week at Watling; from sporting success and inspiring trips to artistic masterpieces and a bumper vegetable harvest.

Eco Committee Harvest Success!

Our Eco Committee celebrated a fantastic harvest from the school garden this week. The team proudly gathered large courgettes, seven vibrant pumpkins, and an abundance of fresh lettuce, all grown from seeds planted by students earlier in the year. All the produce was handed over to Cucina, who will be incorporating these homegrown ingredients into their delicious meals—bringing sustainability straight to the plate.

A huge well done to our dedicated committee members, especially Jotham, Riley and Jordan, for their hard work and commitment to eco-friendly practices. Your efforts are helping our school grow greener every day.

Year 11 RS trip to Cambridge Mosque

On Tuesday our Year 11 GCSE Religious Studies students visited Europe’s first eco mosque, where they were immediately captivated by the stunning architecture that blended traditional Islamic design with modern British influences, reflecting both heritage and innovation. The mosque’s sustainable features such as its timber structure, natural ventilation, and solar panels, highlighted its commitment to environmental stewardship, perfectly harmonising with its serene garden and tranquil water fountain that students found peaceful and reflective. Inside, the attached art gallery offered a rich journey through time, showcasing the contributions of Islamic scholars in science, mathematics, and medicine which helped shape the modern world. The tour guide’s passion and depth of knowledge brought the history of Muslims in the UK to life, helping the group understand the mosque’s vital role, not only as a place of worship but as a hub for community support and education. Students left inspired, describing the experience as both beautiful and enlightening.

Young Artist Exhibition

A number of our Year 9 students have been chosen to represent the school and have their artwork displayed in the Young Artist Exhibition at Westbury Arts Centre this weekend. The Young Artist exhibition celebrates the creativity of local secondary school students and aims to inspire their imagination and grow their confidence in showcasing their work in a professional, public setting. If you would like to go and show your support, the exhibition is open to all with free entry on Sunday 5th October from 10am-12pm. Well done to Popi, Hailey, Yui, Zeynep, Angelina and Arina.

Finally, a huge well done to our Year 7 girls netball team who played their first game this week against MK Academy. The team gave an excellent performance, displaying fantastic teamwork which secured them an incredible 17-0 victory! Congratulations to Sophia, Isabella, Mia, Seher, Nesia, Poppy, Macy, Imani, Maia and Scarlett.

That’s all for this week. Wishing you a restful weekend.
