Our GCSE Options Evening for Year 9 students took place on Thursday 25th January 2024.
The Key Stage Four curriculum is structured as shown below. This allows all students to access a broad and ambitious curriculum with a good amount of choice for individuals to study courses which are best for them. At Watling Academy we have 5 lessons a day. Each lesson is 60 minutes in length. Students follow a two-week timetable.

Core Subjects – All students will study GCSE English Language, GCSE English Literature, GCSE Mathematics and GCSE Combined Science (unless they opt for Triple Science). See the Curriculum and Course Guide below for further details.
EBacc Subjects – Students will be expected to continue to study a language, GCSE Spanish, and at least one from GCSE Geography or GCSE History. See page 9 of the Curriculum and Course Guide below for an explanation of the EBacc and the expectations around these subjects.
Option Subjects – Students will be able to rank their top four preferences to complete their choice of courses. There is a wide range of GCSE and vocational courses available, and students can select from any of these, with some restrictions around combinations.
Other Subjects – Students will continue to have Physical Education lessons, Wellbeing lessons and Tutorial sessions to support their wider personal development.
