At Watling Academy, we are proud to support our young carers. A young carer is a student who helps care for a family member or friend who may have a disability, long-term illness, mental health condition, or substance dependency. These responsibilities can include practical tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and shopping, as well as providing emotional support and helping with medication or appointments.
We recognise the commitment, resilience, and maturity demonstrated by our young carers, and we understand that balancing these responsibilities alongside education can be challenging. Our aim is to ensure that every young carer feels valued, understood, and fully supported to achieve their potential.
We provide a range of tailored support, including dedicated Young Carers Advocates, Miss Clayton-Gibbons and Miss Harward, regular check-ins, and access to pastoral care. Where appropriate, we make reasonable adjustments to help students manage their responsibilities while maintaining their wellbeing, ensuring they can fully engage in school life.
Students and families can access support by contacting our Young Carers Advocate directly, speaking to a member of the pastoral team, or approaching their form tutor. We also encourage parents and carers to inform the school if their child has caring responsibilities so that we can provide timely and appropriate support. In addition, we work in partnership with external organisations, such as CHUMS, to further support young carers and their families.
Together, we strive to create an inclusive environment where all students, regardless of their circumstances, can thrive.
If you would like support from CHUMS, you can make a self-referral through their website. Alternatively, with your permission, the school can make a referral on your behalf. Please contact us using the email address below if you would like further information or support with this process.
For support, advice, or to let us know about a student with caring responsibilities, please email youngcarers@watling.academy. We will respond as soon as possible and will be happy to help.
