PSHE and RSE

PSHE

PSHE education at Watling Academy is a planned, developmental learning programme in which children and young people gain the knowledge, understanding, and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. PSHE education, as part of a whole-school approach, fosters the qualities and attributes that students require to thrive as individuals, family members, and members of society. PSHE education can assist the Academy in reducing or eliminating many of the barriers to learning encountered by students, significantly improving their ability to learn and achieve. The PSHE education programme contributes significantly to students’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development, behaviour, and safety, as well as the school’s statutory responsibility to promote students’ well-being.

PSHE education provides students with the knowledge, comprehension, skills, and strategies they need to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible, and balanced lives. It encourages them to be entrepreneurial and assists them in making effective transitions, making positive learning and career choices, and achieving economic well-being. A critical component of PSHE education is allowing children and young people to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes, as well as explore the complex and sometimes contradictory range of values and attitudes they will encounter now and in the future.

PSHE education helps to personal development by assisting students in developing confidence, resilience, and self-esteem, as well as identifying and managing risk, making informed decisions, and understanding what drives their decisions. It teaches kids how to recognise, accept, and form their identities, how to comprehend and accept difference and change, how to regulate emotions, and how to interact productively in a variety of circumstances. Understanding oneself, empathy, and the capacity to collaborate with others can assist students in forming and maintaining positive relationships, developing critical skills for future employment, and better enjoying and managing their lives.

RSE Education

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) will expand on what was taught in primary school. RSE’s goal is to provide young people with the information they need to create healthy, caring relationships of all types, not only romantic connections. RSE material examines the characteristics of healthy and harmful relationships, as well as what constitutes a good friend, colleague, and a successful marriage, civil partnership, or committed engagement. At the proper time, the emphasis will shift to forming intimate connections in order the provide young people with the information they need to make safe, educated, and healthy choices as they enter adulthood. It will also cover subjects such as contraception, building personal relationships, and avoiding sexual pressure (and not applying pressure). Students will also understand what behaviours are acceptable and undesirable in relationships. This will assist students with understanding the positive benefits that successful relationships have on their mental wellbeing, identifying when relationships are not right, and understanding how to manage such circumstances. At Watling Academy the above RSE topics are taught via the PSHCE curriculum.
